Know Your Diamond: A Buyer’s Guide
At Chauhan Jewellers, we believe that purchasing a diamond should be a well-informed and exciting experience. Understanding the key factors that determine a diamond’s quality helps you choose a stone that perfectly matches your preferences and budget. Here’s your quick guide to understanding diamonds:
The 4 Cs of Diamonds
Diamonds are graded based on four key characteristics, known as the 4 Cs:
Cut
The cut of a diamond is one of the most important factors in its overall beauty. It refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted. A well-cut diamond reflects light in a way that maximizes brilliance and sparkle.Ideal/Excellent: Maximum brilliance and fire.
Very Good: Excellent brilliance with slight variations.
Good: Visible flaws, but still beautiful.
Color
Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color a diamond has, the more valuable it is.D-F: Colorless (most valuable).
G-H: Near colorless (excellent value).
I-J: Faint yellow (good value).
Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence of internal or external imperfections (called inclusions and blemishes). The fewer the imperfections, the higher the clarity grade.Flawless (FL): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2): Minute inclusions that are difficult to see.
Slightly Included (SI1, SI2): Small inclusions that are visible with magnification.
Included (I1, I2, I3): Inclusions visible to the naked eye.
Carat Weight
Carat weight measures the size of the diamond. One carat equals 0.2 grams. While carat weight affects a diamond’s price, it’s important to remember that two diamonds of the same weight can differ in value based on the other 3 Cs (cut, color, and clarity).
Diamond Shapes
Diamonds come in a variety of shapes, each offering a unique look:
Round: The most popular shape, known for its brilliance.
Princess: A square or rectangular cut with sharp corners.
Cushion: A soft square shape with rounded corners, often referred to as the “pillow” cut.
Emerald: A rectangular shape with stepped cuts and a large table, offering a sophisticated look.
Oval: An elongated round shape that gives the illusion of a larger size.
Asscher: Similar to emerald but square, with a deep pavilion and step cuts.
Pear: A teardrop shape, combining the brilliance of a round diamond with the elegant curve of a marquise.
Marquise: An elongated shape with pointed ends, often used for unique or vintage designs.
Diamond Certification
When buying a diamond, it’s crucial to ensure it comes with a certification from a reputable gemological institute. This document outlines the diamond’s 4 Cs and guarantees its authenticity. The most respected labs include:
GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant)
At Chauhan Jewellers, every diamond comes with a certified grading report, so you can be confident in your purchase.
Diamond Fluorescence
Some diamonds exhibit a phenomenon called fluorescence, where they emit a blue glow when exposed to UV light. While this does not affect the diamond’s overall quality, it may influence its appearance in certain lighting.
No fluorescence: Most diamonds fall into this category.
Strong fluorescence: Can affect the diamond’s appearance, making it appear milky or cloudy, although this is rare.
How to Choose the Perfect Diamond for You
When selecting a diamond, consider these tips:
Set a Budget: Determine your budget before diving into the 4 Cs. You can still find beautiful diamonds that fit your price range.
Prioritize the 4 Cs: Balance the 4 Cs according to your preferences. For example, if you prefer a larger diamond, you may choose a slightly lower clarity.
Shape Matters: Select a shape that complements your personal style. Each diamond shape has a different appearance and character.
Certification is Key: Always ensure your diamond is certified to confirm its quality and authenticity.
Caring for Your Diamond
Diamonds are durable, but they still need care to maintain their beauty:
Cleaning: Use a soft cloth to clean your diamond. For deeper cleaning, soak the diamond in warm, soapy water and gently scrub with a soft toothbrush.
Storage: Store your diamond jewellery separately in a soft pouch or box to avoid scratches from other jewellery.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Keep diamonds away from harsh chemicals or abrasive surfaces that can dull their sparkle.
